The second must occur in the space for which you are being certified (313 Hammond or the Learning Factory on west campus). The first occurs online: you read the materials on this page, watch a video, and take an online quiz. There are two components to our Basic Safety Training. I.e., our training can not be used to replace training in other research and fabrication labs on campus. Note that Safety Training completed in the Learning Factory is valid only for work in the Learning Factory. For information on our additional training, see our Other Training page. You must have our basic Safety Training to use any of our spaces. All students in the College, with appropriate training, are eligible to use the facility. We provide access to a wide variety of tools and equipment, from hand tools to laser cutters, mills to an embroidery machine. We support coursework, research activities, and “passion projects” that interest our students, faculty, and staff. The Learning Factory spaces are the hands-on makerspaces for the College of Engineering. Engineering databases are available on the LIAS E-Resources List, on compact disks, and through online search systems.Safety Training for All Learning Factory Spaces A large reference collection of handbooks, directories, and catalogs is available, as are numerous abstracts and indexes that provide access to the engineering literature. Information on all areas of engineering and technology can be found in the Engineering Library located in 325 Hammond Building. After successful completion of the safety training, any engineering student can use the Learning Factory on a walk-in basis for a Penn State-related activity. Training classes are offered in shop safety, machining, and welding. The Learning Factory provides modern design, prototyping, and manufacturing facilities, including machining (CNC and manual), 3D printing, welding, metrology, and CAD/CAM. The Learning Factory is a hands-on facility for engineering students to use in conjunction with capstone design and other courses, as well as research projects and student organizations. Reservation requests can be made through the CollegeNET 25Live Scheduling System. Kunkle may be reserved only for College of Engineering events only. Located at the junction of Hammond and Sackett Buildings on the University Park campus, Kunkle Activities Center (also known as Kunkle Lounge or just Kunkle) is open in a limited capacity.
